In collaboration with renowned photographer Kwame Brathwaite, Waraire Boswell has created a powerful collection in honor of Juneteenth.
Using images taken during a photo shoot in 1966 at a public school in Harlem by Brathwaite and inspired by the work of The African Jazz-Art Society & Studio (AJASS) and the Grandassa Models who created the Black is Beautiful movement, the women and men in these images embraced the notions of natural beauty and empowerment.
AJASS and The Grandassa Models created the "Naturally" shows which began in Harlem, New York City in 1962 and traveled throughout the country and influenced the world to embrace an African standard of beauty and thought.
